The ancient world of architectural knowledge possesses a vast and far-reaching literature. Whether it speaks of the sacred, or where, out of the human, out of meaning and life, it raises up space and poetry and place. Yet today, in the modern world, architectural knowledge speaks of form and material, of energy, function, and economy; and, ultimately, it celebrates beauty. And it is we who drift between these two literatures, between these two seas. A vessel is needed through which one may build a bridge between them and open a path toward truth, toward being, toward the existence itself. Such a path can emerge only through reflection and inquiry, through being present without preconception, and through writing as thoughts flow. It is with this aspiration that Journal of Architectural and Environmental Research has been brought together – that it might gather this vast world of knowledge into a shared discourse and to fashion a foundation upon which to read, to listen, and to be.
