The modern world is a realm of transformation and change. One such shift in contemporary times is reflected in concepts like the information society, communication, and participatory activities. These developments can occasionally lead to confusion in finding appropriate solutions within the fields of design and urban planning. Consequently, focusing on the satisfaction and sustained presence of citizens is a crucial element of social cohesion. In this context, paying attention to the evolution of design paradigms, contemporary perspectives, and emerging innovations, as well as identifying effective and sustainable approaches within architectural spaces, can serve as a logical solution to overcome complexities.
Objective:
The primary objective of this research is to establish a criterion for resolving uncertainties in designing collective spaces, aimed at enhancing spatial quality and increasing social interactions. "Intimacy of space" is proposed as a novel criterion for assessing the desirability of collective spaces.
Research Question:
The central question of this research is: What is Intimacy of space , what factors influence it, and how can it contribute to fostering interactions in collective spaces?
Research Methodology:
The study employs a qualitative approach, analyzing the concept of intimacy within the field of psychology and extending it to the realm of space and architecture. Based on this, the concept of Intimacy of space is defined and categorized through psychological and architectural theories. Its relationship with humans, collective lifestyles, interaction with architectural environments, and surrounding cultural attributes is also explored.
Conclusion:
The primary findings of this research indicate that the concept of Intimacy of space , through its ability to offer effective solutions for revitalizing urban spaces and promoting social interactions, plays a significant role in shaping and enhancing the quality of collective spaces. Spatial intimacy arises from a profound connection between space and its users and manifests as a spatial characteristic through attributes such as sense of belonging, legibility, and comfort (coziness). This, in turn, fosters interactions between individuals and their environment.
